What’s an annual?
An annual is a plant which grows, flowers, sets seed and dies all in one year!
Some of my favourite to grow are poppies, echium, sunflowers and nigella.
We sow annuals from seed either into pots or straight into the ground. Some annuals don’t mind the cold but others won’t like it until summer is just around the corner.
Here are some idea of annuals to grow now.
Hardy Annual flowers to sow in March - May in the ground
Calendula officinalis(pot marigold)
Lavatera trimestris (tree mallow)
Tropaeolum majus (nasturtium)
Phacelia(fiddleneck)
Papaver somniferum (Oriental Poppy)
Annual flowers to sow in March in to pots indoors, to be planted outside in May.
Helianthus annuus (sunflower)
Amaranthus caudatus (love-lies-bleeding)
Echium vulgare 'Blue Bedder' AGM (viper's bugloss)
After the last frosts, around May, you can sow any seeds and plant young seedlings outside.
